Swapping in a new set of closed springs on the 77 Fiat; the old open set had these seatings installed at the top where they mount to the shock tower. Are they just to level the springs? Spacers for export models? Structural for dampening?

Made out of rubber? Probably serve some degree of dampening *and* level the springs. Early Mustang/Falcon front springs use a rubber dampening/leveling block similar to that. I’d say it depends on how the spring sits without it.

Made of steel actually, with a plastic bottom/insert that’s maybe 1/4" thick at the bottom.

On the second point, too much slop without it. Looks like I’ll be reusing them.

Apparently the correct term, at least for a Mustang, is “spring isolator”. Which apparently can be run with, or without. If the isolator will fit the new spring, that’s probably okay (as long as the new spring is similar in height or less), but it should also be possible to run without.

Does the isolator have a curved step on it?

It does. Seems to fit on decently with the new spring too, and would keep it from moving around....

Then, with that spring, you need to use it. If your spring looked flat like this, then you could discard it:

Ah, makes sense, flat, no, closed or open, yes.

Well, according to the manufacturer, I do not need the “spring cups”.
These things are seriously the worst named parts on a car... isolators, seatings, cups.... none of the search strings works well for identifying what I’m dealing with.
